Mentoring

Alongside my done-for-you and done-with-you work, I am also an experienced mentor working with small businesses and early career professionals.

I've benefited greatly from both formal and informal mentoring throughout my education and career, and continue to do so. For a long while I couldn't quite understand why these people were so generous with their time and teachings - other than that quote about advice being a form of nostalgia. That was until I stepped into the role myself and realised what a privilege it is to play a small role in someone else's success story.

Why work with a mentor like me?

Let's break this down; why with a mentor, and why work with one like me.

Mentors use their own unique mix of experience, knowledge and coaching skills to support you on your own journey. It's not about providing you with a to-do list to tick off - that's either a consultant, a PA or a parent. And it's not getting into the existential trauma - that's for your therapist. Mentors are there to develop your capabilities and confidence, using what they've learnt along the way, in a curious, confidential and non-judgemental space.

You might be at the start of your career and want to explore what might be next, and how best to prepare. You might be a business owner experiencing a boom and/or a bust and need someone who can help get you back on track. Mentors work with all walks of life and at all junctions, and that's one of the things that I love about the role.

My own squiggly career provides me with plenty of practical advice and tomes and tomes of theory, and I've chosen to upskill through the Association of Business Mentors and ILM to ensure that my coaching and mentoring skills are effective, enabling and informed by the latest research and best practice.

Who do I work with?

Everyone can benefit from mentoring and we don't have to have the same background, end goal or ambition to work together. However, I do find having a similar set of values and sense of humour (cat videos and Silicon Valley anyone?) helps. This means I usually end up pairing with:

  • Young people aspiring to work in professional motorsport and engineering careers

  • STEM professionals moving into operational and management roles

  • Self employed, small business owners and managers

How do I work?

There are three ways you can currently work with me as a mentor, dependent on your circumstances:

I am based between Banbury, Brackley and Oxford, and love nothing more than a challenging conversation over an Earl Grey if you're local, but most of my mentoring practice is carried out online. That gives you and I more flexibility and accessibility, plus the privacy that is sometimes needed to tackle the big topics.

Expect a minimum commitment of 10 hours/3 months, and to pay me! Being an educated and ethical mentor involves considerable investment and costly continuous professional development, so whilst I provide my skills free of charge to a number of great causes, mentoring is a part of my paid portfolio.

To get started, send me an email or set up a short discovery call and we can discuss how you could benefit from mentoring, and how I could support you.
